A Promising Advance in Prosthetic Technology

If you or a loved one lost a limb in an accident, you might be encouraged by the promise of a new type of technology. Recent research has been conducted that may someday allow a prosthetic limb to feel with artificial nerves.
According to Popular Mechanics, researchers have created artificial nerves that can cause a muscle response in cockroaches. In human patients, this could allow a patient with a prosthetic limb to feel sensation and pressure someday.
In the research, scientists used artificial nerves to detect motion of a rod that was moving in different directions. They also were able to identify Braille characters. When the scientists connected an artificial neuron to a cockroach’s neuron with the leg taken off, nerve signals from the artificial neuron made the cockroach twitch and move.
How The Science Works
The human sense of touch has thousands of sensors tracking different sorts of pressure. The senses need to be sufficiently strong enough to pass a gatekeeper before they are sent to the brain. An artificial sensory nerve imitates this process in three ways. First, several sensors pick up on various levels of pressure and create a boost in voltage between the electrodes. Another device turns the voltage into electrical pulses, and a third device sends electrical pulses in ways that imitate neurons.
The nerves the scientists used in the study were made from flexible and organic materials and were not expensive to manufacture. It is possible that in the future scientists could add artificial nerves to artificial limbs to help injured people regain some sense of touch.
The Devastation of Losing a Limb in an Accident
Our Dallas personal injury attorneys at Guajardo & Marks are pleased to hear of the progress being made in research. A motor vehicle accident or other type of accident that leaves a victim with the loss of a limb or a need for amputation can leave him with terrible physical challenges, changes in lifestyle and huge piles of medical bills.
Common causes of loss of limb and amputation injuries are:
- Car accidents
- Tractor trailer accidents
- Automobile defects
- Medical malpractice
- Rollover accidents
- Commercial vehicle accidents.
There have been many advances with prosthetic devices in recent years and some accident victims are able to regain a certain amount of functionality and mobility. But many who have lost their limb or limbs are no longer able to work in the job they had before. Loss of income is a major part of any personal injury lawsuit when there is an amputation or loss of limb.
