The Most Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

Causes of Automobile AccidentsTraffic accidents happen to be one of the most common causes of injury throughout the world. As a car wreck lawyer, one of the things that you come to realize quickly is that the majority of these accidents are somebody’s fault. With that being the case, that means that the majority of accidents could be avoided. While you cannot control what other individuals do behind the wheel, you can control your own behavior and take steps to at least ensure that you don’t commit any of these common causes of automobile accidents.

Distracted Driving

Drivers that allow themselves to become distracted when they are operating a vehicle are the most common cause of car accidents. Distractions take your focus off the road and in doing so, slow your reactions and reduce your awareness. This is a safety problem that has always existed, but in recent years, it has become worse with drivers doing things like talking on the phone or sending text messages when they should be paying attention to the road.

Speeding

The roads and highways have speed limits for a reason. These are not limitations that are set arbitrarily or with little consideration. These are the speeds that a vehicle can safely travel on a particular stretch of road. There is a variety of factors that go into determining the appropriate speed limit on a roadway. The conditions of the road surface, whether the road is relatively straight or if it has a lot of curves, the amount of traffic that a road usually has, the level of visibility that a driver will have at different sections of the roadway and more. When you exceed the speed limit, you set yourself up for the potential to lose control of the vehicle or to reduce the amount of reaction time that you may have.

Drunk Driving

Driving while you are intoxicated should be an obvious no-no, but plenty of people still engage in this dangerous behavior. When a person is drunk, it significantly slows their reactions, it impairs their motor skills and it impairs their judgment. When you combine those three factors, it makes for a driver that can make any roadway dangerous.

Reckless Driving

The term reckless driving sounds somewhat vague but Texas law defines it as a person that drives a vehicle in a way that shows a willful or wanton disregard for safety of persons or property. This can include other violations like speeding or driving while intoxicated, but it can also include things like tailgating, unsafe lane changes or driving too fast for the weather conditions. In other words, some forms of reckless driving may be explicit infractions of the law like speeding and others might just be a clear display of disregard for safe driving practices.

These are the four most common causes of roadway accidents, but the list does go on. If you do your best to avoid these behaviors, you will not only reduce the chances of being the cause of an accident, but you will be doing your part to make the roads safer for everybody.
