Americans Less Concerned about Dangerous Driving Habits
The results of a recent AAA survey indicate that Americans are less concerned about the risks of drunk driving, texting while driving and other dangerous behavior behind the wheel that can contribute to car accidents than they were four years ago, in spite of last year’s spike in fatal traffic accidents.

Some notable aspects of the AAA survey include:
- The number of drivers who believe that driving after drinking is a “serious threat” declined from 90 percent four years ago to 69 percent in the most recent survey
- The number of drivers who believe that texting or emailing while behind the wheel is a “very serious threat” declined from 87 percent in 2009 to 81 percent in the new survey; the number of people who admitted to texting while driving, however, increased from 21 percent to 26 percent
These figures are especially concerning as they come soon after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released early accident statistics for 2012 that show a spike in motor vehicle accident deaths for the first time in six years. “We have made great strides in recent years to reduce road deaths, but there are still too many needless fatalities caused by dangerous driving,” said Jake Nelson, AAA’s director of traffic safety advocacy and research, in a statement on the AAA website.
