According to preliminary estimates released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 34,080 died in U.S. fatal car accidents in 2012. Those figures represent an increase of about 5.3 percent from 2011, and if the data holds 2012 will mark the single-year increase in deaths since 2005.
