What is a Safety Defect in Motor Vehicles?

- Vehicle Defects
According to the United States Code for Motor Vehicle Safety, motor vehicle safety is defined as “the performance of a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment in a way that protects the public against unreasonable risk of accidents occurring because of the design, construction, or performance of a motor vehicle, and against unreasonable risk of death or injury in an accident, and includes nonoperational safety of a motor vehicle.”
Examples of Safety Defect in Motor Vehicles
Basically, the car, truck or motorcycle you drive should not endanger your life, but too often it does. News about auto recalls is never ending—scores of vehicles are recalled each month. Some of the more common, and deadly, reasons that automobiles are recalled include:
- Wheels that break or crack, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle
- Problems with the fuel system that causes vehicle fires
- Air bags that deploy at the wrong time, or fail to deploy in an accident
- Accelerator pedals that break or stick
As you can see, any of these defects threaten the safety of anyone in the defective car and anyone driving near it.
There are other times when a car is recalled for a non-safety related issue. These recalls involve issues such as poor paint quality and excessive oil consumption. While these problems do not directly threaten the safety of the car’s owner, they do speak to a lack of attention to detail, a lack of concern for the quality of the vehicle being produced.
