Infant Injuries Have Increased in Recent Years Thanks to These Products

Much to the concern of worried parents everywhere, the risk for injury is ever-present in the lives of our children. Injury is the leading cause of death and morbidity among people ages 0 to 19 in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most parents are aware of the fact that many of these injuries are suffered by exposure to hazards related to drowning, suffocation or burns, but one study recently highlighted a somewhat surprising cause of infant injuries – nursery products. The study found that every 8 minutes, a baby is injured because of one of these products. That’s an alarming statistic for many reasons, one of which is the fact these products were designed for use around children, yet cause such a high number of injuries to children.

Which Specific Products are Causing Infant Injuries?

The products in question are mostly those used to transport or hold infants, including cribs, carriers and strollers. The biggest issue appears to be children falling from these units, often striking their head upon impact with the ground.

When the researchers looked at a total of 48,653 incidents over a 20-year period, they found that nearly 20 percent were linked to carriers, over 18 percent were linked to cribs or mattresses, over 16 percent were linked to strollers and another 16 percent were linked to walkers, jumpers or exercisers.

Infant injuries have increased by nearly a quarter over the period studied by researchers. This raises questions about the cause such a surge. One of the more benign explanations is that these products became more popular over that period. However, it can also be the case that manufacturers and sellers of nursery products have not made safety their top priority.

When Design Leads to Injury

Consumers are regularly exposed to products that are defective and carry the potential to cause serious injury or illness. It’s disconcerting to think that our children could also suffer from faulty design, but it wouldn’t be the first time. Children have been exposed to hazardous products, like that those including lead paint or materials that cause choking, on several occasions over the past few decades.

It is only after consumers lodge complaints or file lawsuits against the makers of these faulty products that regulators intervene or the manufacturers themselves are forced to recall harmful products. That’s why it’s vital for consumers to act when they encounter dangerous products. Those actions could lead to compensation for injuries and potentially save others from experiencing the same issues.
